Introduction to Recycled Water

Sign

Recycled water benefits communities. As we do with paper, plastics, glass and cans, water too can be reused instead of being thrown away. Water recycling has a long, safe and successful history. California has been using recycled water since the late 1800s, when it was first used for agricultural irrigation. Municipal use of recycled water in California started in 1929 in the City of Pomona. Locally, Golden Gate Park in San Francisco began using recycled water for irrigation in 1932. There are currently more than 5,000 sites in California that use recycled water, including the San Francisco 49ers' practice field in Santa Clara, the Pebble Beach and Spyglass Hill golf courses, and hundreds of vineyard acres owned by Gallo Wineries.
